GP’s opens in Hamilton Park

Last night, the much-anticipated GP’s Restaurant & Bar opened its doors in the Hamilton Park area of downtown Jersey City. The family has owned restaurants in Hudson County since 1934. GP’s other location in Guttenberg has been there since 1977.

Serving “home cooked Italian comfort foods,” the Jersey City menu includes small plates like a variety of crostini, small pressed sandwiches and antipasti. Main courses include things like pasta, GP’s Famous Meatballs and various seafood and meat dishes. They will also offer outdoor seating and weekend brunch.

For more information, check out GP’s Facebook page and follow them on Twitter @GPsRestaurant.

Surf City Opens Thursday

From the developers of Jersey City’s family-friendly beer garden Zeppelin Hall comes Surf City. It sits where the old Sandbar used to be on the waterfront. This new self-touted “restaurant & megabar” features three-acres on the water, complete with a sand beach, cabanas and fire pits! Their tag line is “New York latitude — Key West attitude” and they have banned things like dance and techno music (along with “steroids and Ed Hardy”), so it won’t be anything like it’s predecessor. More than 75 taps will bring an impressive American craft beer selection and, once up-and-running, the menu will consist of burgers, lobster rolls, fish and shrimp fry and more. As there is a “no fist-pumping” policy (thank goodness) you can relax and listen to casual pop/rock and vacation music or dine on one of their four outdoor decks. The best part? I learned today that they are totally family-friendly!

Jersey City has needed a place like this. There is so much vacant, wasted space along the waterfront — Surf City is a welcome addition. Plus, I love that there’s another place with a decent beer selection downtown! You can arrive by “boat, car, light rail or PATH” and there is unlimited free parking available. The hours are Monday – Friday 4pm – 2am and weekends noon – 3am. Check out their Facebook page or follow them on Twitter for more information.

The grand opening is Thursday, June 28 at 4pm.

Two Boots Pizza opening in Jersey City

The infamous NYC-based pizza joint, Two Boots, has set up shop at 133 Newark Avenue and on June 18 the wait is over! When asked why he chose this new location for his nationwide restaurant, Phil Hartman explains, “Jersey City’s cool.” Well, we’re certainly glad he thinks so. Two Boots Pizza is joining an area that has become known as downtown Jersey City’s “restaurant row.” The area was rezoned last summer and includes parts of Newark Street, Grove Street, Jersey Avenue and Columbus Drive. Basically, it just allows restaurants with liquor licenses to be located closer to one another than previous laws mandated, in an effort to attract them to downtown JC. Click here to see a map (courtesy of Jersey City Independent) of the area before and after the zoning. Recent much-needed establishments that have opened in this newly zoned area include Barcade and Thirty Acres.

A soft-opening is tentatively scheduled for Monday evening, June 18, followed by an Opening Party on Wednesday, June 20 from 6pm – 8pm featuring live music and free pizza! Plus, delivery will begin the following week.

In the meantime, get updates, announcements and “free awesome things” on the restaurant’s main Facebook page and by following them on Twitter @twobootsnyc.
