Jersey City Farmer’s Market Roundup

The season is finally here for farmer’s markets in Jersey City! I’m obviously over the moon about this and you should be, too! Fresh fruits and vegetables, delectable baked goods…even knife sharpening. It’s all back! The glorious days of farmer’s markets usually begin in May, but this year there are some markets opening earlier. Hamilton Park’s market opens today! Check out what will be open where and when. Kicks off Wednesday, April 17 
Every Wednesday from 3pm – 7:30pm through December

This is my closest farmer’s market and my most frequented. It has become such a staple of our summer. We’ve watched this little market grow by leaps and bounds these past few years. This year they’ve added even more vendors. Vendors include: Cocoa Bakery (my personal favorite), Lizzmonade (yum, another staple of summer), Pizza Vita Mobile Pizza Truck, Poplar Wood Farm, City Girls Food, Amanda Bananas and many more!

lVan Vorst Park Farmer’s Market 
Kicks off Saturday, April 20
Every Saturday from 8am – 3pm through December

Saturday mornings are a great time to peruse this laid-back market in Van Vorst Park. Vendors include Hoboken Farms, Aspercolas Farms, Central Valley Farm, Cocoa Bakery, Lizzmonade, Honey Bakery, X-Caliber knife sharpeners, How Sweet It Is and more.

Kicks off Monday, May 13
Every Monday and Thursday from 4pm – 8pm through December

This market is conveniently located at the Grove Street PATH Plaza. So, you can easily grab some good eats on the way home from work. Along with great vendors, this market offers up the area’s greatest food trucks (including The Taco Truck)! Vendors include: Cocoa Bakery, Lizzmonade, Staten Island Kettle Korn, Amanda Bananas, BBQ at Legal Beans, Jersey City Veggie Burgers and many more!

JSQ loewsJournal Square Farmer’s Market
Kicks off Wednesday, June 19 (this is the scheduled date, but they may open earlier)
Every Wednesday and Friday from 11am – 7:30pm

It’s located on the plaza just outside the Journal Square PATH station. Vendors this year include: Ort Farms, Alstede Farms, Stony Hill Farms, Honey Bakery, Senor Peanuts, Baker’s Bounty and many more.

Every Sunday from 9am – 2pm

This year marks the third season for this farmer’s market in JC Heights. Vendors will include Alstede Farms, Nature’s OwnCocoa BakeryHoney Bakery, Pickle LiciousPizza Vita Mobile Pizza Truck, Jersey City Veggie Burgers, Handmade Jewelry by Jade, Aurora Naturals of Hunterdon and many more.

Jersey City Family Activities & Fourth of July Events ~ June 29 – July 4

Here are some of the family-friendly events and activities you can enjoy this week and for Fourth of July in the Jersey City and Hoboken area!

Creative Grove

This “meeting place, market, art experiment and scene” convenes every Friday at the Grove Street PATH plaza in downtown Jersey City. Tomorrow, it’s a Belly Dancing/Wine Tasting Party. “Artists, food, fashion, recycled crafts, outdoor lounge, tribal market, whimsical creations, street art, play chess or checkers.” Admission is $20. Friday, June 29 from 3pm – 9pm at the Grove Street PATH Plaza.

Van Vorst Park Flea Market & Fundraiser 

This Saturday, the second annual community flea market will take place to benefit the groups that improve and maintain Van Vorst Park. If you are interested in selling your wares, visit the Van Vorst Park website for details. Saturday, June 30 from 9am – 4pm at Van Vorst Park, Jersey City.

Tango for Van Vorst Park Fundraiser

Part of the fundraising going on Saturday will include a night of Tango dancing, Argentinean wines, tapas and sweets. There will be dance performances and lessons available and included with admission. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. Saturday, June 30 from 7pm – 11pm at Barrow Mansion, 83 Wayne Street, Jersey City.

Fourth of July Information:


Macy’s will be displaying its famous fireworks, which will deploy from six barges (between 24th Street and 50th Street in Manhattan), over the Hudson River. However, there are a limited number of areas that they can be seen from in NJ. You will be able to view them from Weehawken, Hoboken and Jersey City Heights. Click here for information via MommyPoppins NJ. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, Liberty State Park will not be having fireworks and will be closed to the public on the evening of July 4.

Fourth of July Street Closures

There will be several major roadways closed in the area during the July 4 Fireworks display. Sinatra Drive in Hoboken will be closed from 7pm until the fireworks are over. Boulevard East from Weehawken to North Bergen will be closed beginning at 7pm. Port Imperial Boulevard and River Road from Weehawken to North Bergen at 7pm. The county is urging those who want to see the fireworks to use public transit. Click here for NJ Transit information regarding the fireworks and traveling. Click here for Hoboken’s fireworks information, including parking restrictions, street closures and the announcement that the Steven’s campus will be closed to the public on July 4.

JC Farmer’s Markets

Jersey City Farmer’s Markets will still operate the week of July 4. Hamilton Park Farmer’s Market will be held on the actual day (Wednesday, July 4), so don’t worry – you can still get all the fresh stuff you need for your BBQ! *Note: Hoboken Family Fun Night, Movies Under the Stars and Concerts in the Park are all canceled for the week of July 4.

Groove On Grove 

Every Wednesday, catch live music at the Grove Street PATH Plaza. Tonight is “Shes & Hims Showcase” and the lineup includes Vanessa Perea, Brendan Kibbee and more! Don’t forget the beer and liquor provided by Barcade and Saigon Café. Pick up some good street eats at The Taco Truck, who is stationed here every Wednesday evening! JC Farmer’s Markets 

The Historic Downtown Farmer’s Market returned for another bountiful summer on Monday. You can check it out Mondays and Thursdays at the Grove Street PATH Plaza from 4pm – 8pm. The Hamilton Park Farmer’s Market returns today and this year it’s better than ever! Now boasting 15 vendors, this market has something for everyone this year. Vendors include, our personal favorite, Cocoa Bakery, Lizzmonade, Stony Hill Gardens, Pizza Vita Mobile Pizza Truck (which was amazing and wildly popular!) and more. Bring your reusable totes every Wednesday from 3pm – 7pm around the Hamilton Park Gazebo.

Pilates in the Park Fundraiser

In its fifth year, Renaissance Pilates is hosting this fundraiser to benefit cystic fibrosis. The nephew of Danielle Buccellato, founder of Renaissance Pilates, Stanley Zolek is the spokesman of the event. Come for a free 55-minute Pilates class on the Hudson River and donate money to the cause. A raffle will be held, along with a champagne toast at City Bistro’s rooftop. Saturday, May 19 starting at 9am in Maxwell Place Park, Hoboken. Map.

Hoboken Citywide Yard Sale & Flea Market

This citywide event will take place at 25 different locations across Hoboken. Find everything you can imagine! Beginning Friday, May 18, click here for a listing of locations. Saturday, May 19 from 10am – 3pm, Hoboken.

I know this isn’t technically a local deal, since it’s an online company, but I think it’s a really good one! Rooftop Films Free Earth Day Event and FREE TICKET GIVEAWAY 

In celebration of Earth Day, Rooftop and BBC America will present a free screening of the landmark natural history series “Planet Earth,” followed by the World Premiere of “The Making of Planet Earth.” The screening will be held outdoors on the pier at the solar-powered event space Solar One (23rd Street and East River). This event is family-friendly and the first 250 people get a free ticket to be used at any Rooftop Films show this summer! Hoboken Green Fair 

Come check out live music and organic food vendors at the Hoboken Green Fair. The Historical museum will even be giving historic bike tours and there will be a family/community bike ride beginning at 2pm. The fair takes place on April 21 from 11am to 5pm at Pier A Park on the Hoboken waterfront. Map.

Liberty State Park Earth Day Fair and Festivities 

A 5K family run and walk (for 12 and up) and Earth Day Fair will be held on April 21. Activities include an “Eco-Olympics”, tree seedling giveaways, food, “Kid’s Kingdom” with free rides, arts & crafts and live entertainment. It all begins Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 10am at Liberty State Park. Map.

Liberty Science Center’s “Science Near You” Web-Tool 

Learn about our environment this Earth Day with this new website, created by Liberty Science Center. “Science Near You” allows you to enter an address and find great opportunities to explore the world of science in NJ! Destinations include the Lakota Wolf Preserve, The Adventure Aquarium, Astronaut-in-training opportunities, enviro-education with the NJ Audubon Society and much more.

This Living Social deal is great if you want to get your kids to the dentist, but don’t have dental coverage.
