Halloween Event Guide 2013

halloween-backgrounds-8The ORIGINAL Jersey City Halloween Event Guide is back for 2013! The 2012 Halloween Event Guide was a huge success for Adventures of a Mama! Although we haven’t been around much lately – we’re back and ready for Halloween. There are some really cool and spooky events going on in the Northern NJ and NYC area this Halloween. Check out some of our eerie favorites and have fun spooking! **DON’T FORGET TO CHECK BACK OFTEN FROM NOW UNTIL HALLOWEEN — WE’LL BE ADDING NEW EVENTS REGULARLY**

Ongoing and “Week-Of” Events:

State Scare Haunted Attraction: Oct. 25 – 27 and Oct. 30 – Nov. 2 from 7:30pm – midnight. This attraction is located adjacent to State Fair Seasons (formerly State Fair Halloween Superstore), which is at 229 Main Street in Belleville. While the nighttime event is suitable for children 12 and up, there is a Sunday Matinee for younger kids from 4pm – 6pm. Tickets prices: General admission $20/All Ages, VIP (skip lines) $35/All Ages, Not So Scary Matinee $8/Child 12 and under. Click here  for a $2 off coupon (only valid for nighttime event).

4th Annual Jersey City Zombie Crawl: Friday, Oct. 25 at 9:30pm. The fun begins at the Grove Street PATH station during Creative Grove night and moves on to LITM where you will transform yourself into a zombie and begin your undead crawl. Official T-shirts and face-painting are available for $10 or come dressed-up!

imagesClassic Horror Films: Saturday, Oct. 26 at 6:30pm and 8:30pm. Head on down to Landmark Loew’s Jersey City Theater and enjoy the classic horror films The Bride of Frankenstein (at 6:30pm, tickets $7/adults and $5/kids and seniors) and the silent Phantom of the Opera (at 8:30pm, tickets are $10/adult and $8/kids and seniors).

Halloween Fun at Liberty Science Center: LSC is Jersey City’s Halloween Headquarters, with so many activities to celebrate the spooky day! Weekend programs include: Bloody Hand Prints, Mystery Boxes, Do You Dare?, Brainless Artifacts, Creepy Crawly Worm Dissection and A Bloody Mystery. Plus, check out some spooky live action shows like Monsters Alive: Nature of the Beast (see fabled beasts up close!) on October 26 – 27 at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm (tickets $5/person) and Zombie Autopsy (do zombies live?!) on October 26 – 27 at noon, 3:30pm and 4:30pm. For the first time, families can enjoy the Halloween Camp In: Sleepless Slumber Party, where you will have access to hundreds of hands-on exhibits, a film in the IMAX Dome Theater and fun Halloween-themed activities! The Sleepless party will run from 6pm October 25 – 9am October 26 and is $60/family (mention code SPOOKY for a special discount when you call to reserve your spot). Liberty Science Center is located in Liberty State Park at 222 Jersey City Boulevard in Jersey City. The Turtle Back Zoo Halloween Events: This fun little NJ zoo has some great events coming up for Halloween. Check out Spooky Zoo on October 25 from 6pm – 9pm and have fun with animal presentations, crafts, games, scary (and “not scary”) train rides and more! Ghost Stories will be told on October 26 from 1:30pm – 2:30pm at the zoo amphitheater. Get the kids in their costumes and come to the zoo for Howl-O-Ween on October 31 from 4pm – 9pm — safe trick-or-treat at more than 30 candy stations and ride the scary train! The Turtle Back Zoo is location at 560 Northfield Avenue in West Orange, NJ. Admission for both is $3/Member and $5/Non-member (kids under 2 are free).

Halloween Week at Jersey City Public LibraryHead over to the main branch of the Jersey City Public Library a 472 Jersey Avenue, for a week of Halloween fun! Activities will include: Halloween Stories for all ages on Monday, October 28 at 3pm, Make-and-Take Halloween Craft on Tuesday, October 29 at 3pm (make a cool trick-or-treat bag!), Halloween Fun and Games on Wednesday, October 30 at 3pm and a Spooky Movie on Thursday, October 31 at 3pm. Check out Halloween Crafts at: the Marion Branch of the library on October 29 at 3:30pm, the Lafayette Branch on October 30 at 3:30pm and at the West Bergen Branch on October 31 at 3:15pm. Fourth Annual Afternoon of Fright on Fourth Street: Saturday, Oct. 26 from 3pm – 6pm. Presented by the Harsimus Cove Association and the Fourth and Fifth Street Block Associations, this annual Halloween block party will take place on 4th Street between Jersey Avenue and Coles Street. It’s so much fun each year, with loads of activities for small children, including games, DJ, dance area, face painting, balloons, a photo booth, food, a live music by Princess Kate and Racer Steve and much more! Wear your costumes and have some ghoulish fun!

The Ghost of Uncle Joe’s Halloween Fundraiser:  Saturday, Oct. 26 from 2pm – 10pm. This annual benefit is for and at the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery located at 435 Newark Avenue, Jersey City. Dress up and bring the family for Halloween fun at Jersey City’s “national treasure”! Learn about the history of the cemetery, listen to great music and have some food and refreshments. Live local bands will be resurrecting Elvis Costello, Cream, The Doors, The Violent Femmes and more! Food will be available from Cal’s Hot Dogs and Honey Bakery. Suggested donation is $10/person. Don’t forget about the After Life Party at the Lamp Post Bar and Grille beginning at 10:30pm!

Halloween Parade for Kids and Pets in Paulus Hook Park: Sunday, Oct. 27 from 1pm – 4pm. Grab the kids and pets for this day of Halloween fun in Paulus Hook Park on Grand and Washington Streets. The Children’s Costume Parade begins at 1pm, with awards in various categories, and the Pet Parade begins at 2:30pm (vaccinated, well-behaved and leashed pets of all kinds welcome). $10 registration fee benefits Paulus Hook Park Redesign and the LibertyHumane Society.

Hamilton Park Annual Halloween Parade: Wednesday, Oct 30 at 5pm. Get your costumes on and march in the parade around the Hamilton Park and participate in activities!

DOCO Supernatural Halloween Festival: Don’t miss two days of Halloween fun at DOCO! On Oct. 30 at 4:30pm check out Pumpkin Carving Craziness! For a $5 donation you will get your little one a pumpkin of their very own to carve! On Oct. 31 from 6pm – 8:30pm come down for the Monster Mash. For a $10 donation, your little one will get face painting, photos, punch, games, treats and more! DOCO is located on Hamilton Park at 29 McWilliams Place.

Halloween “Day-Of” Events:

First Annual Jersey City Halloween Bash at City Hall: Thursday, Oct. 31 from 5:30pm – 8:30pm. This free event is sure to be spooktacular! Dress up and bring the whole family down for a night of fun including “Fright Night Movies”, a petting zoo, face painting, trick-or-treating, moon bounce, a costume contest and many more activities!

The Annual Hoboken Ragamuffin Parade & Costume Contest: Thursday, Oct. 31 at 3pm. The parade begins on Washington, between 12th and 13th and features local live music, floats and lots of costumed folk! The costume contest will be held at the Little League Field on 5th and River Terrace, immediately after the parade. Prizes will be awarded in five age categories. Expect bands, entertainment and more!

Halloween Parade for KiddosThursday, Oct. 31 from 4pm  – 6pm. HDSID  is hosting this parade, which will travel down Newark Avenue to the Grove Street PATH Station. Get your costumes on and come down for free pictures and treats.

Slice-O-Ween at Two Boots JC: Kids in costume will get a free slice at Two Boots Jersey City! Two Boots is located at 133 Newark Avenue.

Mall Wide Trick-Or-Treat: Thursday, Oct. 31 from 3pm – 6pm. If you want a controlled environment to trick-or-treat in, take the kids to the mall! Collect candy, participate in activities — even win giveaways and prizes! The Newport Centre Mall is located at 30 Mall Drive West.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Thursday, Oct. 31 at 8pm. Maxwell’s of Hoboken has been reanimated for Halloween — let’s do the time warp again! This feature will include a live performance by The Home of Happiness and the entire event is a for the Jersey City Cemetery Volunteer Project. Costumes are encouraged! $15 suggested donation at the door. All proceeds go to the benefit of The Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery.

Here are some NYC Halloween events that are worth traveling into the city for:

Boo at the ZooWeekends through Nov. 3. The Bronx Zoo hosts this Halloween event annually. Highlights include a hay maze, costume parade, dinosaur safari, treat stations, live music and more. Get 10% tickets if you purchase online! Tickets (with discount) are $30.56/Adults and $21.56/Children (ages 3 – 12). Zoo hours are Monday – Friday 10am – 5pm and 10am – 5:30pm on weekends and holidays. The Zoo Shuttle is $3 for the whole day. Parking is $15 for the day. Strollers and wheelchairs are available for rent. The Bronx Zoo is located at 2300 Southern Boulevard in the Bronx. Click here for directions.

The Haunted Pumpkin Garden at the New York Botanical Garden: Now through Oct. 31. Celebrate Halloween with some family fun and intricately carved pumpkins, parties and parades! New this year, check out creepy creature encounters every weekend! Tuesdays – Fridays from 1:30pm – 5:30pm and weekends from 10am – 5:30pm explore the garden on your own, play in the Pumpkin Puppet Theatre, enjoy spooky readings and more. Weekdays at 1:30pm and weekends at 1pm and 3pm, take part in the daily parade! Also on weekends, bug out at the Ugh! Bugs & Creepy Creatures exhibit, featuring turtles, snakes, frogs, bugs and more! Stay later from 6:30pm – 8:30pm (Oct. 25 -26) for a Spooky Nighttime Adventure and explore the Adventure Garden by flashlight after dark. There will be trick-or-treating and pumpkin decorating activities. For this event, you will need a “special event ticket,” which will cost you $20 per person or $15, if you’re a member. Weekday “All Gardens Passes” are $20/Adult, $8/Children 2 – 12 (under 2 are free) and $18/Student (with valid student ID). Weekend “All Garden Passes” will cost you $25/Adult, $10/Children 2 – 12 and $22/Student. The New York Botanical Garden is located at 2900 Southern Boulevard in the Bronx. Click here for directions.

Halloween Parade & Pumpkin Sail in Central Park: Sunday, Oct. 27, 4pm – 6:30pm. The event will be held at Dana Discovery Center (inside Central Park on 110th). Bring your costumed kiddos and a carved jack-o’-lantern to participate in New York City’s largest pumpkin flotilla at twilight. There will be entertainment and festivities including spooky music, crafts, live entertainment, a parade and more. Click here for information on how to participate.

40th Annual New York City Village Halloween Parade: Thursday, Oct. 31 at 7pm. Celebrating it’s 40th anniversary, this infamous NYC parade’s theme this year is “revival.” Only those in costume will be welcomed to line up! Last year’s parade was the first ever to be cancelled (due to Hurricane Sandy), so come out and celebrate this year! You can watch the parade live on 6th Avenue from Spring Street to 16th Street from 7pm – 10:30pm or watch from the comfort of your living room, while waiting for the doorbell to ring, on WPIX Channel 11 from 7:30pm – 9pm or NY 1 from 8pm – 9:30pm.

Hoboken Harvest Festival: Saturday, Oct. 20, 11am – 3pm. Pier A Park, First Street and Frank Sinatra Drive. Highlights include hay and pony rides, pumpkin painting, moonwalk, food, hay maze, face painting, sand art and more.

Halloween Fun at Liberty Science Center: LSC is Jersey City’s Halloween Headquarters, with so many activities to celebrate the spooky day!  Night of the Living Dead in 3D: Oct. 24, 26 – 28, 30 – 31. Check out the frightening 1968 classic now restored, colorized and in 3D! Tickets are $11.25/Adult and $8.50/Child. Click here to buy tickets. Spookley the Square Pumpkin: Oct 21, 27 and 28 at 10am, 11:30am and 1pm.Take your younger children ages 3 – 8 to see this cute Halloween film. Tickets are $3.50/Person. Click here to buy tickets. Costume Contest: Saturday, Oct. 27 at noon. Bring the kids in costume and they could win a free LSC birthday party. Suitable for kids up to age 12. Movie Monster Science Trivia: Saturday, Oct. 27, all day. LSC’s version of trick-or-treating – visit all the exhibitions to play trivia games and get candy as a prize! See if you’re brave enough to put your hand inside a “scare box”! Suitable for kids ages 5 and up from 10am – 3pm (free with paid admission). Ticket prices: Adults $15, Children $13. Halloween Crafts at Jersey City Public Library:

Pavonia Branch: Thursday, Oct. 25, 3:30pm. The Pavonia branch is located at 326 8th Street, Jersey City. Main Branch: Monday, Oct. 29, 3pm. The main branch is located at 472 Jersey Avenue, Jersey City. Heights Branch: Friday, Oct. 26, 3:30pm. The Heights branch is located at 14 Zabriskie Street, Jersey City. Ghosts of Uncle Joe’s Halloween Masquerade Rock & Roll Ball:  Saturday, Oct. 27, 1:30pm – 10pm. This benefit is for and at the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery located at 435 Newark Avenue, Jersey City. Dress up and bring the family for Halloween fun at Jersey City’s “national treasure”! Learn about the history of the cemetery, listen to great music and have some food and refreshments. Halloween Celebration: Wednesday, Oct. 31, 4pm – 9pm. Bring the kiddies in costume and have fun with “safe trick-or-treating”, ride the spooky train and more! The Turtle Back Zoo is location at 560 Northfield Avenue in West Orange, NJ. Admission for both is $5/General and $3/Members (kids under 2 are free).

The parade begins at 10:15am sharp!

Third Annual Afternoon of Fright: RESCHEDULED TO: Sunday, Nov. 4, 3pm – 6pm. Presented by the Harsimus Cove Association, this annual Halloween block party will take place on 4th Street between Jersey Avenue and Coles Street. It’s so much fun each year, with loads of activities for small children, including games, crafts, music by Princess Kate and Racer Steve, face painting, a haunted tent, leaf jump, food, treats and who can forget the Halloween photo sessions? Wear your costumes and have some ghoulish fun!

Fall Festival: Sunday, Oct. 28, noon – 4pm. Presented by Hudson Dance & Movement and Hudson Ballet, this festival will have carnival games, face painting, a cupcake walk, costume contest, dance off and (the best part of all) learn the choreography to Michael Jackson’s Thriller (admittedly, a longtime dream of mine). Wear your costumes and win prizes! All proceeds from this event will go towards Hudson Ballet, a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts organization. Tickets are $5/Child and $7.50/Adult. The event will take place at 70 Hudson Street, 4th Floor, Hoboken.

Here are some NYC Halloween events that are worth traveling into the city for:

Stay later from 6:30pm – 8pm for a Spooky Nighttime Adventure  and explore the Adventure Garden by flashlight after dark. There will be trick-or-treating and pumpkin decorating activities.
